About the Programme :

This online two part programme prepares IT professionals and graduates for senior business roles. It provides students with relevant management skills and an understanding of the strategic issues associated with businesses operating in an IT environment. Examinations are held in the student’s country of residence.

As the MSc in Strategic Business Information Technology is studied in two stages, 2 major qualifications are awarded to successful candidates. Students must first pass the Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Business Information Technology (PDSB), developed and offered online by the National Computing Centre (NCC) through the Cybercampus. Successful candidates are then eligible to continue onto the module on Research Methodology and the Dissertation to graduate with the MSc awarded by the University of Portsmouth. The programme, which can be completed in 12 to 18 months, provides a thorough knowledge of IT in business, strategy and management. There is a strong IT theme running throughout the course and an opportunity to build on existing technical competencies in networking, to an advanced level. Some basic information about the course administration :

  • Once you have been accepted and registered, you will be sent a study guide with specific information about your course together with personal Log-in and User ID passwords which are activated 24-48 hours after they are issued to you. With these passwords you will then have access to the study material and the virtual University eCampus through the Internet.

  • Times are published on the cyber classroom for live on-line chat sessions with the course tutor / facilitator and fellow students. There are at least 3 chat sessions for each module, each session being approximately 90 minutes. Participation is not compulsory but highly recommended. If you miss one, you can catch up by reading the chat log which can be viewed at any time.
  • The study material for each module is available through the eCampus web site for approximately six weeks from the start date published in the study schedule.

  • For each module you should expect to spend an average of 25 hours on-line during which you can download the study material and participate in the live discussions. You can study the material off-line at your own pace and at times which are convenient to you. In addition to the time on-line, you should expect to spend around 20 to 40 hours per module offline working through the study material and exercises. The Study hours will depend on your background.

  • If textbooks are being used for particular modules, they will be sent to you by courier.

Online study incorporates the following techniques :

Bulletin Board - to communicate with each collective group of students and for students to post administrative or other general questions.

Information Sources - in addition to unit based learning material, this will include such things as coursework and examination results, feedback on assignments, schedules for synchronous discussions, past examination papers, programme regulations.  

Synchronous Chat Rooms - these are provided for online synchronous discussion on set topics led by the unit facilitator. Discussion rooms will be limited to a maximum number of students of about twenty. The discussion may take many forms:  

  • A topic discussion.

  • A consultation where the session is driven by student questions.

  • A seminar lead by a student or group of students

Chat Rooms - these are asynchronous discussion rooms where the students are grouped into relatively small cohorts. Essentially any student may post a question or information which then acts as a thematic starting point for a discussion in the sense that any student or staff may then contribute to the theme.

Unit Bulletin Boards - these are asynchronous discussion rooms. Essentially any student may post a question or information, which then acts as a thematic starting point for a discussion in the sense that any student may then contribute to the theme.

Drop Boxes - a specialised email service for submission of assignments or other required information.

Handouts - a specialised bulletin board where facilitators may post additional material for students to collect if they wish.

eMail - the mechanism will allow both general and private communications between students and staff.
