Introduction

It is widely accepted that the travel, tourism and hospitality industry today is the largest and most pervasive sector within the global economy.

It is an industry that comprises many components (historical attractions, theme parks, travel agents, airlines, museums, hotels and restaurants among others) in both the public and private sectors of most countries. Attracting visitors is high on the economic agenda of all countries, states and cities. What travel, tourism and hospitality, world-wide, has in common is the need to provide quality services to increasingly discerning customers in a business-orientated manner. This need requires management leadership in all the main functional business areas (finance, marketing, human resource management, and operations) as well as the strategic leadership associated with general management.

ABE’s new Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications in Travel, Tourism and Hospitality provide a pathway through which students aspiring to management roles in the sector can develop a combination of key business skills and industry knowledge in preparation for the varied and demanding careers which the industry offers. Diplomates at all levels can use the combination of business and vocational subjects which they have pursued as a route to rewarding employment or as a stepping stone to further study in colleges and universities world-wide. The Travel, Tourism and Hospitality pathway is structured identically with that in ABE’s Business Administration and Business Information Systems programmes, is of a comparable level and shares a number of business subjects with them.

The Structure of the Qualification

The new qualifications in Travel, Tourism and Hospitality are offered at Certificate, Diploma (Parts 1 and 2) and Advanced Diploma level. Colleges may wish to offer ABE’s qualifications at Certificate and Diploma level alongside local practical vocational or trade qualifications in areas such as catering, food service or travel agency operations. This may permit enhanced initial employment opportunities. Decisions relating to this should be taken in consultation with local travel, tourism and hospitality industry representatives.
