AIM
To provide the underpinning knowledge
to enable a purchasing and supply professional to contribute to the management
of people.
RATIONALE
Private and public sector
organisations' greatest asset is the people who work for them. Managing this
resource effectively is the key to sustainable competitive advantage for
organisations of the future, and thus forms an integral part of the work of the
effective manager in the purchasing and supply function.
1. Human Resource Planning,
Recruitment and Selection
Determining the need.
Describing the job.
Specifying the skills and attributes required.
Attracting the candidates.
Selection methods.
The legal and regulatory framework.
In the assessment the candidate may
be required to:
analyse the job description to produce a person specification
prepare an effective job advertisement
identify how the candidate may be assessed
identify the characteristics of an effective interview
describe a range of selection procedures
describe recruitment and selection policies and procedures
identify relevant Employment Law and Equal Opportunities Legislation. (weighting

2. The Management of Teams
The importance of teams in developing supply chains.
The dynamics of team working including Belbin's analysis.
Building a successful team to add value in the supply chain.
The role of leadership in effective teams.
In the assessment the candidate may
be required to:
evaluate the importance of teamwork
evaluate group dynamics in the structure and design of teams
identify the ways effective teams are created and managed
compare and contrast current leadership theories. (weighting 20%)
3. Management Skills
Controlling meetings.
Effective delegation.
Presentation skills.
Time management.
Conflict resolution.
Managing change.
In the assessment the candidate may
be required to:
investigate the ways in which communication may be made more effective within
the management of the supply chain
demonstrate an understanding of the principles of effective delegation
evaluate time management techniques
describe different techniques for the management of conflict
describe typical responses to organisational change
identify appropriate methodologies for planning and managing change. (weighting

4. Motivation and Job Design
Approaches to motivation.
Forms of job design.
Empowerment.
Management of stress and Health & Safety.
In the assessment the candidate may
be required to:
describe the main methods associated with job design
apply motivational approaches to the workplace
analyse the concept of empowerment
describe the essential features of health & safety responsibilities in the
workplace. (weighting 20%)
5. Performance Management
Induction.
Appraisal techniques.
Staff development programmes.
Performance management techniques.

describe the process of induction
evaluate the methods of appraisal in improving performance
discuss the characteristics of a systematic approach to training and development
