About CIPS, the Royal Charter, Code of Ethics Details

The Institute

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS) is an international organisation, based in the UK, serving and supporting the purchasing and supply profession. As with all British Institutes, CIPS provides a full range of services for the benefit of its members and the wider business community. In 1992, after 60 years of operation, CIPS was awarded a Royal Charter in recognition of its leading role in this field. CIPS is dedicated to promoting best practice within the profession and is the largest provider in the UK of specialist courses across all aspects and levels of the supply chain, from the start of a career to senior management level.

Education

We offer the following CIPS programmes which you can start at anytime and which may be studied by Distance Learning from your home or office. Opportunities are available to applicants from any country in the world. There are currently over 14,000 students studying for a CIPS qualification through different methods of study, with approximately 5,000 outside the UK.

  • The CIPS Advanced Certificate in Purchasing and Supply

  • The CIPS Graduate Diploma

The Certificate level programmes are available to develop basic skills and knowledge, particularly for newcomers, providing opportunities to them progress to the Diploma programme

Central to everything CIPS does is its commitment to people development through its education programmes – ensuring that there is a range of qualifications with supporting training programmes, materials, textbooks and networks.

CIPS recognises the broader purchasing and supply processes perspective and yet, at the same time, allows for the development and application of specialist expertise in different parts of the supply processes.

Opportunities are available to applicants regardless of their location and we currently have over 17,000 members studying for a CIPS qualification worldwide.

Our education programme provides opportunities at several levels to enable members to pursue studies in purchasing and supply management, in the context of the broader business environment.

The Certificate and Advanced Certificate in Purchasing and Supply will appeal to those who are new to the profession.

The CIPS Graduate Diploma (Foundation and Professional levels) is a degree-level qualification which provides an advanced understanding of those issues which affect the business environment and impinge upon the purchasing and supply management function.

Special Assessment Needs

CIPS is happy to accommodate and approve special assessment and examination arrangements to enable candidates who might not otherwise be able to do so to demonstrate their achievement. Full details of the CIPS policy are available on request.

NVQs

Members studying for NVQ in Procurement are advised that, although these are not CIPS-owned qualifications, they do offer a recognised route to full membership of CIPS. Candidates are advised to follow the route from NVQ3 to NVQ4 rather than transfer to an academic route through CIPS.

All NVQ4 candidates will be expected to have gained at least three years’ experience in a position of responsibility in purchasing and supply to achieve full membership of CIPS.

Post-graduate opportunities

The Graduate Diploma is increasingly becoming a stepping stone for post-graduate studies and there are a number of specialist purchasing and supply programmes available which CIPS graduates may wish to consider. Ultimately the decision for acceptance onto such a programme lies with the university authorities and is based not just upon previous qualification but other specific criteria. The Directory of Study Facilities contains details of universities which offer post-graduate programmes.
