Introduction to Supply and Materials Management
AIM
To provide an introduction to the
role of supply chain management in the organisation
RATIONALE
Organisations in the private and
public sectors are increasingly turning to professional supply chain measures
and procedures to reduce costs and utilise internal resources efficiently. In
this environment, it is important that purchasing and supply professionals are
aware of the measures designed to promote purchasing and supply as a critical
function in both the organisation, and to satisfy the end customer.
1. Materials Management Concepts
Terms - materials management, supply chain management, logistics.
Inventory policies.
Valuation of stock.
Stock inventory, stocking to order, and stocking to forecast.
In the assessment the candidate may be required to:
explain the purposes of stock
valuation and monitoring stock, and be able to apply ABC analysis
identify different costing systems
identify the various methods of stock
replenishment and apply them to given environments
contrast the various methods of
material flow
correctly define the concept terms
listed. (weighting 20%)
2. Supplies Management in Different
Environments
Resource needs in the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors.
Resource needs for MRO, capital goods, resale goods and services.
The concept of materials management in all sectors.
Lean supply and the supply chain's contribution to customer delight.
In the assessment the candidate may be required to:
recognise the different materials
concepts in different organisations
identify the advantages and
disadvantages of materials management in different environments
define the role of supply chain
management in achieving the objective of customer delight
evaluate
the dilemma of maintaining service levels whilst avoiding stock costs.

Obtaining the Supply
Introduction to standardisation and variety reduction.
Analysis of total acquisition costs and methods.
Introduction to dependent and independent demand.
In
the assessment the candidate may be required to:
explain
the processes and purposes of standardisation and variety reduction
outline
methods of minimising total acquisition costs
define
the differences between dependent and independent demand and describe

Organisation of Supply Chain Management
The need for coordinated and defined ordering procedures.
Relationships with internal and external customers.
Supplier relationship concepts.
Organisational ethics.
In
the assessment the candidate may be required to:
explain
the CIPS code of ethics and the organisational need for such a code
identify
the need to maintain relationships with all parties in the supply chain
recognise
and explain the ordering procedures that organisations in all sectors
have
available to them.
5.
Logistics in the Supply Chain
Transport systems.
Location of stores facilities.
Outsourcing the transport function.
Internal movement of goods.
Stock location and layout.
In
the assessment the candidate may be required to:
contrast
different transport systems
identify
factors affecting stores location
evaluate
the merits of own transport against outsourcing
discuss
appropriate stock location and layout schemes
describe
alternative methods of internal movement of goods
demonstrate a knowledge of stores procedures and cost reduction. (weighting 20%)
