Frequently Asked Questions for Examinations

These are the questions frequently asked by Student Members about examinations.

Do I have to register as a member before I can take examinations?

Yes. It is recommended that you register as a student member at least six months prior to your first examination(s). Even more importantly, as soon as you decide to enroll on a course of study, you need to decide which particular programme you should start with. Depending on your previous qualifications and experience you may need to start with the Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Purchasing before moving onto the Graduate Diploma.

Where can I study?

a) at a local college - usually evening classes

b) at home - using a distance learning with MCG or CIPS Study Guides

c) by flexible or modular learning through MCG or CIPS

Are there deadlines for examination registration ?

Yes. The closing dates each year for examination entries are:

March 17 for May examinations

September 17 for November examinations.

A personalised examination entry form will be sent to you by post. This form can be used to register for a new examination, or to re-sit an examination which you have previously failed. You should complete the form and submit it, together with your payment, to reach CIPS before the deadline.

If you have not received an examination entry form in the post, you can print one from the CIPS web site

How do I qualify for exemptions from certain examinations?

Exemptions are not available against any of the modules within either the Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Purchasing and Supply, however they can be granted if you have a qualification of an equivalent level, which has covered one or more subjects in the CIPS Graduate Diploma. For example, an HNC or HND would be required for exemptions at the Foundation Stage, or a degree for exemptions at the Professional Stage. CIPS does not normally grant exemptions from core subjects at the Professional Stage.

If there is no examination centre near my home - what do I do?

If there is not a centre within reasonable travelling distance, alternative arrangements can be made.

Can I use a PC or Word Processor in the examination room?

Sorry, no you cannot. However, CIPS has a policy of helping any students with particular special needs. Please contact an Examinations Officer at CIPS if you feel you need help.

What information is available from CIPS to help me with my examination ?

Exam statistics, past examination papers and Examiners’ Reports are published for each subject and are available on the CIPS website

You will also find useful information on the on the student pages of Supply Management magazine

When will I receive my exam results?

No later than 10 weeks after the examination date.

Will anybody else see my examination results or are they totally confidential?

Results are posted to you at your given address, and a full listing of results is also sent to the college or examination centre. Otherwise no one else can know your results. Results can only be communicated in writing or by fax. CIPS cannot and do not disclose results over the telephone.

If I disagree with the result, can I get feedback on my examination performance ?

Individual performance reports for each subject can be requested from CIPS. The cost of each subject report is £45 and it will give information on how you performed in an examination.

The report will be written by another subject specialist examiner who was not involved in the original marking. The purpose of the report is to :

Check for any errors in marking; check for any calculation errors; check if the second examiner agrees with the result awarded by the first examiner; and provide feedback on your performance, question by question.

If as a result of this process, the second examiner disagrees with the first mark awarded, resulting in an upward change of grade band, CIPS will refund the report fee in full.

How do I request feedback on my exam performance and how long does it take ?

If you would like a feedback report, you must contact the CIPS examination team in writing within TWO weeks of receiving your results. You may pay the fee of £45 per subject to CIPS by cheque or credit card. CIPS will normally be able to provide a feedback report for you within two months.

In the meantime you should enter for any failed examination in the usual way. If as a result of the feedback process, a fail grade is upgraded to a pass, CIPS will automatically refund your fees within two weeks, and withdraw you from the appropriate examination.

When will I get my certificate?

Certificates for the Certificate and Advanced Certificate in Purchasing and Supply will be issued only when all five modules of each programme have been completed successfully. However a statement of passes achieved can be issued at any time.

Certificates for the Graduate Diploma will be issued within eight weeks after you receive your results, providing of course that your annual subscription to CIPS is paid up to date.

When can I submit my Graduate Diploma Professional Stage project?

When it's ready! You do however have to complete and sign a declaration form when you submit it, as this is your formal entry. If you would like more advice, please contact a member of the CIPS education team and ask for the project guidelines.

If my membership grade changes, will my membership card be re-issued to reflect this?

New membership cards are printed on the anniversary of your membership renewal. The new card will reflect your new membership grade.

When can I use the designatory letters after my name ?

Only Corporate Members are entitled to use the letters MCIPS and Fellows are entitled to use the letters FCIPS. There are no designatory letters for the affiliate, student and associate grades.

Do I need to continue to pay my subscriptions if I have completed my examinations ?

If you wish to retain the benefits of membership, you should continue to pay your annual subscription. CIPS Corporate Membership certificates will only be despatched to those successful candidates whose subscriptions have been paid.
